My Story

I am walking to the North Pole to raise funds for the Borne HMRI Collaboration, a research program in preterm birth based in Australia working with Borne UK www.borne.org.uk
Borne is a medical research charity working to identify the causes of premature birth to save lives, prevent disability and create lifelong health for mothers and babies.

Premature birth is the leading cause of childhood disability and death worldwide. Every year, 15 million babies are born preterm and this number is rising. It affects millions of people and comes with a high emotional and financial cost to our society.

Borne’s mission is to improve the lives of all babies and their mothers through pioneering research into the treatment and prevention of premature birth.
Based in London (U.K.), we fund and conduct translational research into the causes of preterm birth to develop diagnostic, treatment and prevention strategies to reduce the rate of prematurity. We also aim to attract the best scientists and clinicians to this area of medicine and increase awareness Increase awareness of preterm birth and its social, personal and economic consequences

Premature birth is extremely close to my family's heart, after we lost out daughter Sophie and son Henry, in 2012 and 2014 respectively, from issues arising from pre-term birth.

After such events happen, it can take a while for you to look up and see that you are not alone in grief and that many others are forced to suffer from similar circumstances. In fact, recent research shows that many more are suffering every year as 15 million babies are born premature, and amongst them 1.1 million will survive.

Donating through everyday hero is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe. Once you donate, the money goes directly to the charity.

During April 2018 a team of Borne explorers, in conjunction with Charity Challenge, will walk to the North Pole to raise funds for life-saving research. The challenge is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to trek to the top of the world, skiing and sledging over the polar ice cap to the Geographic North Pole. For our daring expedition team, who’ve signed up to this extreme challenge, it is an exciting opportunity to add their names to the very short list of adventurers who have made the ultimate journey to the North Pole.
Our team, including Borne Chairman Julian Mylchreest, Borne Founder Mark Johnson and some high profile friends of Borne, will face one of the most inhospitable regions on our planet. Logistical problems are enormous; the weather ferocious and unpredictable, ice condition is unstable. Distances are immense, facilities scarce. The trek will challenge our team, push them to their limits, and will no doubt be one of the hardest things they’ll ever do.

The expedition will push our team to their limits and beyond, and will be one of the hardest things they’ll ever do. Each expedition member will face months of gruelling training to prepare them for the adventure ahead. The regime kickstarts with a training weekend across Dartmoor in November where the team will learn how to use their personal harness and will be kitted out with their polar clothing and equipment.

You don’t need to trek to the Arctic to get involved! Your donations will go a long way in helping us raise much needed funds for our life-saving research. Along with all their gear, our intrepid explorers will also be carrying a huge flag with them ready to erect at the North Pole! If you’d like your name, child’s name, a photo or your company logo included, along with a fantastic photo opportunity, then get involved. We also welcome corporate sponsors to share this journey with us, so get in touch to discuss bespoke sponsorship packages.
